Breakdown of Riu Playacar vs Riu Dunamar

by Lenny Travel on 04/06/25

?? Beach

Riu Playacar (Playa del Carmen)

  • Pros: Beautiful, wide beach with powdery soft white sand and calm turquoise water. It’s swimmable and generally free of seaweed and rocks (especially compared to some other areas).

  • Cons: Can get a bit crowded due to proximity to other resorts and its central location in Playa del Carmen.

Riu Dunamar (Costa Mujeres)

  • Pros: Secluded and peaceful beach with nice sand and plenty of space. Usually less crowded.

  • Cons: Water tends to have more waves and the beach can get seaweed, depending on the season. Also, it’s a bit remote from everything (about 40-45 mins from Cancun’s Hotel Zone or Playa del Carmen).

? Winner for Beach: Riu Playacar – softer sand and better swimming conditions for kids.

??? Food

Riu Playacar

  • Smaller resort = fewer dining options (1 buffet, 4 à la carte restaurants). Food is good but not gourmet.

  • Access to Riu Yucatan and Riu Tequila for more variety (great for families who like to explore a bit).

Riu Dunamar

  • Newer resort = more modern dining setup and slightly more upscale feel.

  • Also has 1 main buffet and several themed restaurants (Asian, Italian, steakhouse, etc.).

  • Some guests rate the food slightly higher in taste and variety compared to Riu Playacar.

? Winner for Food: Slight edge to Riu Dunamar, but if you're fine with hopping to sister properties, Playacar becomes more competitive.

?? Kids Activities

Riu Playacar

  • Has RiuLand Kids Club, a children’s pool, and access to water activities at nearby Riu properties (e.g., Riu Tequila has a little water park area that’s great for younger kids).

  • Close to attractions like 5th Avenue, ferry to Cozumel, and eco-parks like Xcaret and Xplor.

Riu Dunamar

  • Also has RiuLand Kids Club, water park with slides (very fun for ages 4-12), and a children’s pool.

  • Feels more self-contained – better for families who want to stay on the property.

? Winner for Kids: Riu Dunamar – mainly because of the on-site water park and newer facilities.
